Under the shadow of the roundhouse and adjacent to the swelling wardan (ocean) sits the 2023 Fremantle architectural pavilion commission – a unique design collaboration between architects vittinoAshe, Whadjuk Noongar traditional owner Brendan Moore, jeweller Melissa Cameron, and Syrinx, a sustainability and green infrastructure company.
Surrounded by the sights, sounds and smells of saltwater and carved cliffs, the Er Pavilion rests lightly on the lawn J Shed – a gathering space for story, music, conversations, and performance for the three weeks of the Biennale.
The Er Pavilion forms a new together-space, crafted from remnant timbers salvaged from the Fremantle Ports A Shed, anchored by limestone, and covered by a shimmering and woven ceiling – adorned with thread collected from Bathers Beach.
Atop the structure, a desalination system will siphon the surrounding salt water, with ngarngk (mother/sun) separating water and salt, so guests of the pavilion – plants, people, and the Walyalup keniny (winds) – can be replenished.

- vittinoAshe
vittinoAshe is a small studio committed to the production of process led architecture. vittinoAshe engages in projects of varying scales and types, from strategic visioning to small highly crafted interiors. The studio’s methods of practice respond to the specific particularities embedded in each project. It is co-directed by Marco Vittino and Katherine Ashe.
- Brendan Moore
Brendan Moore has an undergraduate Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Management and a Master of International Studies. He is an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. He is Chair of the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council and an active member of the Wadjemup (Rottnest) Aboriginal Reference Group (WARG).
- Melissa Cameron
Melissa Cameron is an Australian artist with Anglo-Celtic ancestry. She currently lives and works on Whadjuk Noongar land in Perth, Australia and she has lived in Naarm/Melbourne and on Duwamish lands in Seattle. Trained in Interior Architecture for her BFA and switching to jewellery/metalsmithing as her MFA, her aesthetic sensibility reflects her twin interests.
- Syrinx
Syrinx is a sustainability and green infrastructure company co-directed by Dr Kathy Meney and Dr Ljiljana Pantelic. Kathy is an applied scientist, researcher and innovator, with expertise in ecological restoration and remediation, sustainability (positive legacy) strategies and design, nature-based economies, and wetland systems. Ljiljana is an applied researcher, strategist and decision scientist, and is also an internationally qualified sustainability practitioner.

Accessible portable toilets will be located behind the J Shed. Arthurs Head Public Toilet is also a short distance away.
Food and beverages will not be available on site, but there are several great hospitality options nearby. Visit our Plan Your Visit section for our favourite cafes, restaurants and bars. -

The Er Pavilion is a short walk from the Fremantle Train Station, which is the final destination for the Fremantle Train Line, as well as several bus routes. -
Access
The area is wheelchair accessible, but there is some uneven terrain, including gravel and grassed areas. Accessible portable toilets will be available on site behind the J Shed. The nearest ACROD parking can be located South Mole Lighthouse Car Park or Arthur Head Reserve Car Park.
